It takes less than a minute to set the tablecloth on fire. You chuck your clothes onto the pyre, then add a stack of hymnals for good measure. You spread the books open to make them burn better, then make for the front door.
You're about midway to the door when it opens and a middle-aged man enters. He heads straight for the ewer of holy water and lingers over it. As you continue walking, you realize he hasn't seen you- hasn't even looked up yet.
If you speed up, there's a very real chance you could pass behind him and be out the doors before he notices you... or the fire.
