Inquire around town to learn more about the caretaker

You decide to do some investigating of your own to see if anyone in town knows more about the caretaker than the police do. After several fruitless talks with various townspeople, you decide to give up on this angle for now. Either no one knows anything much about him...or they're too scared to talk.
Wandering around town, you wonder what to do next. You could check out the cemetery now, or wait for nightfall when vampires usually come out. As you are trying to decide, still walking, you wander into a deserted stone courtyard. In one wall is an opening with a set of stairs that appear to go down into the town's old sewer system.
