Climb down into the old stone sewer

You decide to check out the sewer. Climbing down the steep stone stairs, the natural light soon disappears. However, lit torches begin appearing on the walls, allowing you to continue seeing. You frown. Why would someone keep torches lit in an old sewer? Someone - or something - must be using this place as a hideout.
The passage makes many twists and turns. Finally, the main passage ends in a wall, but two more passages branch out on each side. You turn around, back to the wall, to make sure that no one - or no thing - has stalked you down here, then examine the side passages. To the right, it looks almost new, in sharp contrast to the ancient sewer, as if it was recently excavated. And to the left, the path looks older, narrower, and darker, although torches continue to light the walls on both passages.
