This year Archives Week 2008, entitled "Archives City Limits", will focus on music, sound, and pop culture archives. Events will be held October 27-November 1, with a pre-Archives Week fundraising concert. We encourage involvement and suggestions for specific events from all our members!

Theme

In April 2008, we held a vote for three possible topics for this year's Archives Week program. The winner was...

"Archives City Limits" - Music, Sound, and Pop Culture Archives
In August 2009, hundreds of archivists will arrive in Austin for the Annual Meeting of the Society of American Archivists greeted by signs declaring Austin the "Live Music Capitol of the World." By pursuing an Archives Week focused on music and popular culture in archives, we will be able to highlight Austin's two greatest assets: our music scene and UT's #1 ranked Archives program! "Archives City Limits" would explore an aspect of archival repositories not frequently remembered in the publicity efforts of the archives community. This theme has the potential to go beyond the bounds of recorded music and touch on related aspects, such as liner notes, ephemera, moving image, and the papers of prominent figures in music, popular art, or even fashion. We would be able to draw speakers from places like the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Seattle Experience Music Project, our great repositories right here at UT, and the Austin music scene itself. Archives week was first conceived as a way to reach out beyond our small community of iSchool archivists and inform the public at large about our profession. "Archives City Limits" would produce events with a wide range of topics that would interest the Austin music community, and even reach out to undergraduate students and others who might not otherwise learn about our profession or our program. Potential cross-programming with the Radio, Television, Film department and the School of Music would increase our visibility across campus and beyond our usual associations with history and political science. A popular culture theme would also come complete with a wealth of sources for creative publicity and exciting fundraising events.

Special note: Austin City Limits has granted the SAA-UT permission for the play on its name for this year's Archives Week.

Archives Week 2008 will be held Monday, October 27 through Saturday, November 1.

Fundraising concert
When: Wednesday, October 22nd at 7pm
Where: Austin City Limits Studio - 6th floor of Communications Building B (corner of Dean Keeton & Guadalupe)
Tickets: $12 at the door - Pre-order tickets for a $2 discount, Oct. 13-16, 20-21, between 12 and 1pm on Sanchez 4th floor.

Mayoral Proclamation
When: Thursday, October 23rd at 6pm
Where: Austin City Hall (301 W. Second St.)
The Mayor will officially proclaim Archives Week 2008 during the City Council Meeting. Come and cheer on archives!
Info table
When: All weekdays from 11am to 1pm
Where: West Mall near the Union
This year we will be handling an information table on the West Mall to get the word out about our events and about archives in general. People need to know what we're all about and how archives can improve their lives!

Topic: Jazz in the Stacks
When: October 28th, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: The Ragsdale Center, The Mabee Ballroom (3rd Floor), St. Edwards University
A lecture by the donor of a significant jazz LP library, discussion about the creator's vision in building a music collection, and consideration of its research value to the contemporary student. Will also discuss aspects of digitizing such a collection to promote access and afford audience time to visit the archives in the library following the lecture.
Panel discussion
Topic: Documenting Music Communities in Texas
When: Thursday, October 30th at 7pm
Where: JGB 2.102
Panelists will discuss their work with music and related archives, including examples of recordings/visual material and issues they face, both as archivists an users.
Archives Clinic
When: Saturday, November 1, 2-4pm
Where: Austin History Center (810 Guadalupe St.)
The Austin History Center will host its yearly clinic, with a focus on audio and video recordings, for helping and teaching the public about preserving their papers and heirlooms. Bring in your personal and family records to receive guidance on topics ranging from organization and storage to archival preservation of papers, photographs, scrapbooks, home video and audio recordings, electronic records, and other documents. Students and faculty from the University of Texas School of Information and the Kilgarlin Center of the School of Information, along with staff archivists from the Austin History Center and other repositories, will be available to answer your questions.
