The Republic of Colombia (Spanish: República de Colombia) is a country located in northwestern South America and southeastern Central America. A confederal republic, it comprises five states (Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru), which are in turn divided into districts, which are divided into municipalities, and so on. Colombia is a highly de-centralized nation in which the autonomy of state, district, municipal, and local governments rivals that of Swiss cantons.
