What are the Mongols?

The two Mongol factions in Crusader Kings, the Golden Horde (Tag: GOLD) and Il-Khanate (Tag: ILKH), are used by the developers of CK to represent the Mongol invasions of the Middle East, Russia and Europe during the Middle Ages.

The Mongols are not on the map, when will they arrive?

The Golden Horde can (re-)appear between 1212 and 1252

The Ilkhanate can (re-)appear between 1227 and 1266

They appear using province-based events in which tens of thousands of Mongol forces can appear in a province and begin waging war on Europe.

Are the Mongols to be feared?

Yes! There are a whole host of events which give the Mongols a lot of troops to give them a foothold in Europe, detailed in the mongol_invasion_events.txt file in Crusader Kings/db/events/ folder. Also, any ruler that holds either the title of GOLD or ILKH gets a hardcoded +1000 demesne bonus.

Sometimes in games it's possible to acquire a Mongol dynasty ruler- however, the acquisition of this is considered to be almost like a cheat as an infinite demesne limit overpowers the PC. Generally this behavior is outlawed in multi-player games.

This sounds silly, are the Mongols going to destroy me and my game completely?

The Mongols do sometimes greatly change the face of Europe, but Paradox has put in some measures to make gameplay balanced. The "Dynastic succession in the Horde" series of events in mongol_invasion_events.txt ensures that eventually, the Hordes will be forced to adopt Gavelkind (their vassals not getting the +1000 demesne bonus) and break apart. However, be prepared to fight some hard wars especially if you are situated anywhere in Eastern Europe.

Cultural bonus

Any ruler of Mongol culture, regardless of country or religion, has the ability to declare war on anyone without casus belli.
