"Go," you whisper. She can't hear you, but she seems to read your lips, even in the dark. She dashes back to the car and jumps in. She speeds out of the parking lot, across the road, and up onto the highway. You watch the tail lights fade in the distance as you grow weaker by the second. The pain is immense, but you feel a strange peace come over you.

You close your eyes and try to enjoy the sensation of the rain, letting shock set in. You saved Melanie, and some poor woman. That's all that matters. Maybe no one will ever know but those two, but you're a hero, and that has to mean something.
