TBE: Allow the earl to pull you up

From Create Your Own Story

The earl reaches down for your hand, and, despite all his finery, he grabs yours, covered in mud and wet from the ditch. He is clearly strong, and you guess he’s probably good with that saber on his hip, as well as the flintlock pistol that balances the other side.

With a quick tug, he pulls you out of the ditch, and onto the modestly more dry land of the road.

“This way, miss,” the earl says, and he guides you toward the carriage where the two women are waiting.

The carriage looks like something out of a fairy-tale. It is all white with golden-gilt edges, and is pulled by a matched pair of white horses with extra plumage jutting up from their heads. Two men, both dressed in matching coats of dark blue with black and white, sit on top of the coach. A third is standing behind the coach. Surrounding the coach is a mounted troop of soldiers, all looking very smart in their uniforms, but also, you think, very dangerous. They are carrying lances with banners at the tops, but the metal blades look sharp enough to do real damage. You also notice that each soldier has a rifle sticking out of a boot within easy reach.

“Your name . . . miss?” Wickney asks you, saying the last word as if it were something dirty.

“Jennifer,” you say. “Jennifer Lynn Rehder.”

“An interesting name,” the earl replies. “Presenting Miss Jennifer Lynn Rehder, m’ladies.”

The earl bows as he guides you toward the coach, where the older lady has opened the door. The younger lady moves over to make room for you, while she pulls several blankets out of a cubby. As you step inside, the younger girl wraps you up with one blanket, then uses another like a towel to dry your hair.

“Move along,” the older woman says, and the cart lurches into motion, with the clopping of horses and men all around you.

“Now,” the younger girl says. “I’m Lizzy, and this is my grandma-ma, Victora.”

“Nice to meet you,” you say, while the younger girl continues to work on you with the blanket.

“No Miss Rehder,” the grandmother says. “You must get out of those wet things. You’ll catch your death!”

Lizzy pulls the curtains.
