"What's happening?" you mutter groggily. Reality is still trying to put itself back together.
"I'm afraid that you... have passed," the angel says hesitantly. "You're in purgatory right now, the place that lies between Heaven and Hell. Your life situation has been very difficult to sort out, so we cannot yet determine where to put you. I'm here to make sure that you're sent to the right place."
"How?" you ask, trying to get over the shock of being dead.
"That's where you come in. You shall help me sort out your memories, your deeds, and your overall lifetime experiences. Once that's done, you will be sent to Heaven or Hell depending on what we find."
Your first instinct is to tell her just what you have done in your life, but you find yourself unable to recall anything. Your name, your sex, what you did, what you didn't do, what you believed in... Your whole mind is like a slate wiped clean. "I can't remember anything, though..."
"That's also why I am here: to help you figure out what those memories are. Don't worry, it's easier than it sounds... I hope." Not the most reassuring statement in the world.
