See if you could find things to do with your things?

From Create Your Own Story

You place back the book inside your bag. With it is a copper-plated compass and a thin journal. These are just three of the things you took with you on your way back home.

The compass is a birthday gift your uncle Grant gave you when you were just seven. Ever since, wherever you go, you carried the object with you, for you believed it to wield good luck. And so it did (or it seems); it helped you get out of a forest on your Junior field trip night, and you didn't even look at it, and it helped you talk a friend out of leaving his home. Sure, that was years ago, but it seemed like that to you.

The small journal, on the other hand, is a list of notes you wrote during all your trips. It is filled with a lot of confusing scribbles, of your thoughts, of what you were eating at the moment, and even of your dreams the previous night.

Hmm . . ., you think. I need something to pass time. What can I do with these?
