With a sudden "thump", Cassie's body smacked against something hard. She lay still, stunned, for an instant.
When she gathered herself, she recognized where she was. Her own school! Specifically, the hallway leading to the principal's office.
She heard footsteps approaching. A figure loomed above her. Cassie looked up to see the kindly eyes of the janitress, a black woman in her early 40's named Serena.
"What are you doing here, Cassie?" Serena asked in a friendly tone. "And why are you naked?"
"I was showering at home," Cassie explained. "And then... suddenly, there was this weird glow around me... next thing I knew, I was lying here."
"I think someone slipped you a happy pill," Serena giggled. "But never mind that. I can finish up my weekend work here tomorrow. I'll take you to my home for the moment and get you settled."
Serena helped Cassie up, checked to make sure Cassie was physically OK, grabbed a nearby towel and dried Cassie off, then told her to wait for a moment. When Serena returned, she was holding a large overcoat. Cassie put it on, and Serena drove Cassie to an apartment complex and guided her inside a small first-floor apartment.
"It's not fancy," Serena explained, "but it suits my needs." She removed the coat Cassie had been wearing, after first drawing the window blinds. "I think you'd better lie down for a bit. Unless you need food first."
