You unenter through a door that's more like a wooden hatch than anything else. You find yourself on what looks like a large island off the coast of Los Angeles. By the year 32011, the need for living space on Earth has caused thousands, if not millions of artificial islands to pop up around large costal cities. Some, like the one that you're on now, were left abandoned after becoming obsolete or unfashionable. This particular island was made thousands of years ago from a former mining asteroid, but it became too small to build on after it'd been withered away by water erosion. This explains the tunnels that you found.
