Chapter 20: ...And Punishments
You rage inside at the unfairness of the sentences -- Mom, who acted from desperation and is ridden with guilt, gets prison, while Dad, the evil, vicious villain, gets a mild sentence.
Things get even worse. Over the protests of her lawyer, Mom asks the judge to sentence her to the Montano Penitentiary, the worst hellhole of a jail in the entire country. The judge questions her closely, and Mom keeps saying it's the only way she can properly atone for her crimes. Finally, the judge gives in to her requests.
Dad's sentenced to psychiatric treatment at the Silverstone Institution. When you ask the judge (a nice man, who applauds your bravery) about the institution, he winks at you and says it's infamous for it radical and experimental treatments, and that your father may very well regret he didn't get jail instead.
