You shiver in your thin, wet hospital robe, the wind gusting from off the lake. You know you should leave, that he's not coming back, but you remain, hoping. The jeweled crown grows heavy, the edges of the metal biting into your arm, and you finally can't avoid the truth any longer. Cuttle isn't coming back.
Turning away from the lake, you make your way back up the beach, the sand loose and warm beneath your bare feet. For some reason, you expected something different from this. You expected...What? That the two of you would live happily ever after? That he wanted something more from you than a ticket out of the labyrinth? That he loved you? Were you really that big of a fool?
"Wait." The voice behind you is small, timid, and you hesitate before you turn around. Out in the water, just his head and shoulders visible, is Cuttle. "Why did you wait so long?" Cuttle asks.
"You were watching me?"
Cuttle nods.
"Why?" you ask. "Why didn't you come back?"
"I don't know," Cuttle says, looking down at the water in front of him. "I was...afraid. I don't know what you want, and the longer you waited...the more certain I became that whatever you wanted, I couldn't possibly be able to give it to you. I'm just a sepiman."
You walk toward him, wading out into the water until it laps at the hem of your robe. "I don't know what I want," you tell him, "but I'd like you to help me find out. You are not just a sepiman; you are the one that I love."
Cuttle blinks, looking shocked. "You love me?" You nod. "I- I love you, too," he says, gliding up out of the water until he stands before you. You smile and reach out, cupping his cheek.
"Too bad we ruined our first time together by performing for that perverse healer."
"Oh, but we didn't," Cuttle says, his smile widening. "Not really, anyway. I figured he didn't know that much about my anatomy, so I just used one of my regular tentacles on you and pretended like I was really fucking you."
"So, you didn't cum?" you ask.
"No," he says, shaking his head. "So we can still make love for the first time."
