"Ruffles," you murmer in protest, but your hand stays still on his head, neither discouraging nor encouraging. You carefully keep your eyes on the tv, flipping through channels with the monstrosity of a remote your uber-geek brother got your parents. As far as you know he's the only one who knows how to use it. You took weeks just to figure out how to use the tv and half the time you still turn on the dvd-r, the old vcr, the stereo, or the camera on the shelf.

As you flip through the channels your mind is on your dog, who continues to nuzzle against your crotch. 'His nose is getting warmer,' you think. Or maybe it's your crotch. There's a curious sort of buzzing between your legs. You know this is somehow wrong, naughty even. One hard nudge of his nose makes you jump, mashing a bunch of buttons at once. The vcr starts and you frantically mash some more buttons until it stops, ejecting its tape while doing so and turning the tv off.

"Ruffles!" you say again, and...
