As Jennifer is left on the sidewalk, the Doc explains the chain of events that led to your family's downfall.
Marty Jr was approached by Griff Tannen and his gang and asked to join a robbery. The robbery was foiled and Marty Jr took the fall. He was sentenced to fifteen years at the State Penitentiary. His sister was then arrested for trying to break him outta prison and sentenced to twenty years.
The Doc's plan is for you to impersonate your son and tell Griff you won't join in his robbery. The Doc gives you future wear to help your disguise while he goes to intercept Marty Jr.
