Go north across the desert

You decide to head north across the desert. Abandoning the road and your out-of-gas vehicle, you trudge across the dry dirt.

You climb over a mountain range and into a valley. There is no sign of humanity at all. You make camp in the valley as the sun sets, eating as little as possible of your precious food and drinking as little as possible of your even more precious water. Still, they're already more than half gone. You look up at the stars. So many stars. You wonder if there's any other intelligent life out there. Soon you drift off to sleep.

You dream that you're at home, sitting on your comfortable couch watching your favorite reality TV show, a bowl of potato chips next to you and a nice cold beer in your hand. You wake up abruptly, wondering why your lips are so dry. You curse as your brain brings you back to reality.

You continue walking northward across the desert, climbing another range of hills. As you reach the top, you eagerly peer down the other side...only to have your shoulders slump in disappointment upon seeing nothing but another uninhabited desert valley.

That evening, you drink the last of your water and eat the last of your food. You can't make it last any longer. You dream about home again. This time you're at a Nationals game with a tray of nachos in your lap and a large soda in your hand.

You wake up the next morning very weak. Your mouth is so parched it's painful to move your tongue. You stumble forward as best you can.

It takes you two days to crest the next range of hills. You look down the other side and see...a beautiful oasis! You hurry ahead, only to realize it's just a mirage. You look around in desperation.

Suddenly you're seeing skyscrapers all around you. That can't be possible. You're hallucinating. Or are you? You don't know what's real and what isn't anymore. You begin running in circles, shrieking at the top of your lungs.

You fall. You don't get up...ever.
