The local Lord has proclaimed a tourney, open to all who wish to participate. But it's not your average competition. Entrants must bring a monster to battle for the title of Best of Beasts! Oh, and the substantial purse of gold of course, well enormous really. But, what is gold compared to the glory and honor of victory!
The rules of the contest are simple; bring a monster, any monster, to the arena by noon, the day of the tournament. That doesn't leave much time to find a powerful monster, subdue and contain it, then train it for combat. The PCs may be able to use an existing animal companion or a monstrous party member but that might take some of the fun and challenge out of the game.
Of course, it's only at the time of signup they learn that “monsters” aren't allowed to bring any weaponry, armor or other equipment into the ring. That minotaur barbarian needs to check his battleax at the gate.
The first few matches shouldn't be too tough, plenty of people are capable of bringing in a trapped dire rat or a goblin bribed to participate with the promise of splitting the prize. The real fights start once the weaklings have been eliminated.
Hopefully no one decides to take advantage of the fact that a large group of powerful monsters has been assembled in one place and use them for nefarious purposes.
