"We have to check inside," you whisper to Claire. "If there's something in there, we can't risk it coming up behind us in the dark later."
Claire takes a deep breath and stares at you, biting at her bottom lip. She exhales slowly and nods. "Okay," she whispers.
You take out your knife, and climb the two steps to the back door of the car. You keep the light shining at your feet, just so you can enough of what you're doing to not go in blind. Claire takes the steps behind you, and you reach for the door handle slowly.
"Open it quick," she whispers. "Then shine your light in and I'll go first."
"What?" You ask. "No, you can't go first. I'm not putting you in any danger that-"
"I have a shotgun. You have a fruit peeler." She says. "I'm going first."
