"Arturia, get up, lass. We're here."
You come awake with a jerk. "Wha-?"
You realize that the floor has stopped moving. The door of the carriage is open. In the doorway is Duran, with a bright lantern, holding out his hand so that you can step out of the carriage. Past him, outside, you can see some people with lanterns hurrying to and fro. The sky is dark and the night is filled with the sound of crickets and people talking in soft voices.
You rub your neck, which is sore. You must have gone to sleep some time during the trip. "Where are we? I thought we'd get there by sunset."
"Sundown, actually. C'mon, let's get ye t'the inn."
You accept his hand and get out of the carriage, tripping a bit over the long skirt of your dress. Why did you have to go and wear this kind of annoying clothing, you think with a sigh. Looking around, you can see that you are in front of a small inn of some sort. People are leading their horses into the stables. A short, balding man comes up to you and Duran.
"Princess Arturia," he says with a bow, "I am Horst. Welcome to my humble inn. I have been instructed by His Lordship to provide you with shelter until he comes to pick you up in the morning."
"Thank you, Horst," you say with a curtsey. He leads you upstairs to the finest rooms at the inn, and leaves you to get settled.
"I'll be in the adjacent room," Duran says. "Call me if you need anything."
You are somewhat surprised. "Aren't you going to get a drink downstairs?" you ask.
He shakes his head. "No. Likely we'll have t'get up early in the morning. I'll get some rest." He levels a hard look at you. "So should you."
You shrug, not intimidated by his gaze. He goes to the adjacent room. A maid comes in and brings you a nightgown and toiletries, then leaves.
