Your bare, bloody feet burn where they touch the hot, hard, dry earth. Ahead you see nothing but the faintest shadow on the horizon. The dirt road you are following stretches straight in front of you. The only plants you see are dead, and there are few of those. Flies buzz around you. You notice a few other insects, but no larger animals. After awhile, the pain in your feet dulls to an ache, but it becomes hard to walk. You feel yourself starting to sunburn.
