You sling your AK-47 over your shoulder. Your pistol is on your left hip and your knife is on your right. You have just a little bit of food and water with you. You look up at the sun, then down at your darkly tanned skin. At least you never get sunburned.

You look at the dirt road, then at the desert to the north. Northward towards Turkey is the shortest way out of Syria, but you can see nothing but desert in that direction. The road leads eastward towards Iraq, which is a longer distance, but at least there's a road.
