You head to the softball field and buy a ticket. There's not many people attending, so you maneuver your way to the front row of the stands, right behind your team's dugout.
You cheer on your team as they get an early run. The boy next to you is really into the game. He calls out the individual players by name, cheering your team and ripping the other. When their best hitter comes up, he calls her out and says in a voice that can be heard three states over, "You're a wimp and a choker! You couldn't hit a ground ball off a tee!"
If looks could kill, he'd be dead from the glare she gives him. But it apparently gets into her head, as she weakly strikes out.
The other team scratches across a run in the fifth, but in the first extra frame, with you vociferously cheering them on, your team walks off when Veronica Nelson, a powerful black girl, raps the game-winning double.
As you sit back down, the boy next to you turns to you. "You really know your stuff. Want to come back to my apartment and see me collection of softball memorabilia?"
"Or you could come back with me," says a voice. You look up and see Veronica Nelson standing by the railing of the stands. "I just have to get changed."
