You wrap Melanie in a sheet, and lift her as carefully as you can. You may have had a moment of cowardice, but you're not going to let her die. Storm or no storm, you're going to get her the help she needs. You carry her to the garage and load her into the back of your car. Jumping in quickly, you hit the remote and open the door, then back out into the street. It's completely dark out since the street lights are dead from the outage, but as lightning crashes through the sky, you suddenly realize the horror surrounding you.
Cars litter the road, empty. Some have doors still open, some lay on their side. Corpses lay across the street and up into several of your neighbors yards. The rain washes blood from the bodies into a river of red that drains down the street into a culvert. Inside a few of the houses, you can see fire eating at the interior, and you wonder exactly what in the fuck is happening around you. You pause, until you hear Melanie murmuring in the back.
You head down the street, and though you're sure you've run over a couple of bodies on the way, you try not to think of it. You have to keep focus on getting Melanie to the hospital.
As you take the turn to get up on the highway, lightning flashes again and you can see a man accosting a woman at a little gas station off the road. She's yelling as he pulls her from her car, and you wonder if you should help.
