Planet of the Apes/Examine the structure

As you take a closer look at the structure, you are struck with feelings of confusion, despair, rage and fear. It is a structure very familiar to you--and to nearly anyone from Earth. It is the top half of the Statue of Liberty, stuck sideways in the beach, half melted by some unknown force. Even her face appears to be mourning the terrible series of events which led to her downfall as the waves crash against her on the rocky shore.
"I... I don't understand..." you stammer.
"I do," states Landon. "We never left. We're still on Earth and Earth is dead. It's 2,000 years later and we're home. We're..." He falls to the ground and weeps. "It's true... Everyone we've ever known is dead and forgotten."
You fall to the ground. "Oh my God. We never left. We're still here and... We finally, really did it," you stammer. "YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! OH, DAMN YOU! GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!" You pound your fist into the sand as the waves rush over you.
"Let's assess the situation," Dodge replies. "Maybe the United States was attacked, but it can't be like this everywhere, can it? We have to push onward. The soil is starting to show signs of fertility."
