"It's good to be back," you say, grinning at him. Beside you, the other new counselor is wearing a similar smirk.
"All right, now that we're all on the same page, I need to be adamant about something -- just because these boys won't remember what you do to them, doesn't mean you don't have to be careful. A traumatic event is harder to forget, so be gentle with these boys. Now, admittedly, some of them, especially the older, more difficult boys, will need discipline, but make sure you don't leave any lasting injuries, no broken bones, no scars, and for all of our sakes, don't go around branding the boys. We almost got shut down a few years ago because some idiot thought it would be a good idea to burn his initials onto the balls of two boys with a wood-burning tool." Chester shakes his head, looking thoroughly disgusted. "I'm sure I won't have any such trouble with any of you."
"No, Chester," several of you chorus.
"Good. Now, I've randomly divided the boys between you. I suggest you take your group and get to know them, maybe on a hike, or a swim, or something like that. Enjoy your summer." He hands each of you a short list of four names and you return to the mess hall, where the film is just ending. The boys sit in silence, staring at the white screen with glassy expressions. This is going to be fun.
Chester turns on the lights and the spell is broken. The boys begin to chatter excitedly about all the fun things they want to do this summer. Chester quiets them down and the counselors take turns gathering up their groups. You call out the names of your your four boys and take them outside. You have:
- Zeke - an overweight black nine year old
- Yovanni - an angry-looking Hispanic twelve year old
- Xaiver - an overweight white thirteen year old
- William - a withdrawn-looking white ten year old
