You sit down on the sofa, keeping a couple of feet between you. 'Thanks for taking the case,' she says. 'I didn't think you would after you found out that Marty Riordan was involved.'
'I haven't taken it yet,' you say. 'Tell me everything. Especially everything concerning Marty Riordan. And no holding back secrets this time.'
The blonde smiles. 'Of course.' She takes a sip of her drink. If she looked good in your office that morning, she looks even more terrific in the darkened room with the sound of the rain coming through the window. Sitting on the same sofa as her you can see her perfectly in profile. It's a profile to die for. And she knows it.
'Marty Riordan is my brother-in-law,' she says. 'My husband is Arthur Riordan.'
You're surprised. She wasn't joking when she said her husband was rich. But this raises more questions too.
'So what's Marty's angle on this?' you ask.
'My husband's an honest man,' Estelle Riordan says. 'That much you can say for him at least. So he's never hit it off with his brother anyway. Then a couple of years ago, just after we got married, Arthur broke off relations with Marty entirely.
