Make your first decision as King of Barataria
From Create Your Own Story
After the Council has finished congratulating and thanking you, they turn to more pressing matters. While Blanca’s coup was widely condemned by the international community, Barataria’s abundant oil supply and Newtopia’s heavy lobbying have convinced most of the world to accept the new normal. The Council, meanwhile, is little more than a group of disgruntled former politicians who seem to refuse to accept reality, even if they are lead by the current head of the former ruling dynasty and the last elected head of government. It is therefore incumbent on both you and the Council to figure out how to gain legitimacy in the world’s eyes.
One group within the Council thinks the best course of action is going to New York City, to try and lobby the United Nations to recognize the council as the true representatives of Barataria. With support from the UN, other nations may be convinced to level sanctions against the Blanca regime, and there may be a chance for military support from NATO or the United States. With international support and military aid, Blanca wouldn’t stand a chance.
But another group disagrees, saying that trying to get recognition from the UN is putting the cart before the horse. Without demonstrable proof that the council has the support of the Baratarian people, they will never be recognized by the world powers, especially with China and Russia supporting Blanca. It would be far smarter, they say, to go to Brussels to gain support in the European Union. While Barataria was never part of the EU, it still maintained close relations with it, and the strongest voices against Blanca’s takeover came from European capitals. While there is little chance of military support, perhaps in Brussels there could be found a few sympathetic politicians willing to extend a line of credit to the Council. With that money, weapons and supplies could be purchased to help the burgeoning resistance movement already in Barataria.
Both factions within the council wish for you to represent their interests to the respective groups. While you are young and only newly crowned, you are charismatic, well-known, and well-liked for your charity work. Prime Minister Monte takes neither side in the debate, but agrees that whichever course of action you take, he will do the other in order to lobby on the Council’s behalf. Privately, however, member of the council tell you that Monte, while a good man and an excellent bureaucrat, lacks much of the charisma necessary to convince people of the group's cause, and that it is unlikely that he will be successful, so whichever choice you make will probably be the only option.
Which choice do you choose?
Lobby the UN - The riskier choice, but the one with the greater possibility of reward
Lobby the EU - the safer choice, but the one with a more limited reward
