You take turns to choose which restaurant to eat in. For dinner, it is Cate's turn. Your sister picks an Indian place. You don't like the Indian cuisine much; the spices are too unusual compared to your usual diet. You are limited to curry and chicken tikka masala. You order the latter. Cate and the children aren't picky eaters like you. They have a variety of dishes for everybody to choose from. The kids pass on a dessert, only Cate and you have a dessert you cannot pronounce. It tastes delicious, though.
Debra is the first to leave the table. Kirsten and Will stick their heads together and consult their cells about something. With one ear, you hear Kirsten tell Will something along the lines of a close up. This seems to lighten Will up. After Will and Kirsten left, you ask your sister if she knows what your children could have been talking about.
"Close up. I don't know. Maybe an app?"
"Never heard of it. Is it preinstalled?"
"I doubt it, I never heard of it. Are you sure it's called close up? Maybe it is a cruise app. Excuse me." She stops a waitress who is brushing past and asks her: "Does this ship have something called a 'cruise app'?"
"Yes, Ma'am," she answers. "There are several applications our line supports. It is a handy tool to get deck plans, our port schedule, events on board - basically everything our passengers might want to be informed about. Which app do you want to check compatibility with?"
"We don't have an app yet, do we?" Cate looks at you. You shake your head. "How can we download such an app, and which do you recommend?"
"We have flyers available available. Everything is explained in them. If you have a moment, I am going to bring you flyers." The waitress excuses herself.
"I didn't know there were apps for cruise ships."
"Me neither." The waitress returns with a flyer for you each. You flick through the brochure.
"Here. I found it, Jules. Close App and Personal."
"Where?"
"Page three. It's a dating app as part of 'Cruise Control'."
"That's such a lame name." Cruise Control is one of the supported apps, close app an addition to the program. Like any dating app, the users can search by profile for a partner, and since it is integrated into cruise control, user can also search via location and/or on-board event. Everything is anonymous; only a screen name is mandatory.
"Why don't you download it? You could use a fling, surely. How long is it since your dear husband - we shall not mention the name of the cheating bastard - left? Did you get any action since then?"
"Shouldn't we be a bit more drunk before we have a conversation like that?"
"If you want to get drunk, darling, just follow me. I'm on my way to a nice bar. We can be all flirty, and you can be dirty."
Sounds promising. But you are still worried about Will's wellbeing.
