you decide to help the elf and grab one of his plastic spoons to help him dig. You really don't plan to stay and help him for a long time, you are just hoping to pry some more info from him about the statues. In return for your work he gives you a canteen of water and some day old bread.
He tells you that the statues are only statues when you look at them. look away even for a second and they move and kill you to transform you into one of them. He then proceeds to go on and on about how his ancestors build this grand manor without realizing that the stone statues lived in the shadows of the vast woods around the house. His great great great great great great great great great great grand-dad's uncle's wife and her husband were the only two elves to make it out of that house alive by tunneling their way to safety. You almost start to cry because the elf's tale is so moving; he has never seen daylight before and you know if he ever did the light would blind him.
