You don't know how long you lay there by the watering equipment. Eventually you got up and went back to the tractor and finished your work. You're pretty tan from working outside, but lying naked in the sun was too much for you. You got a bad sunburn! Putting your clothes on to go back inside hurts. You know you can't go inside naked, so you grit your teeth and get dressed.
That night at dinner, you tell your stepdad that you're sunburned (you only mention your legs, face, and shoulders, of course) and ask if you can go into town to buy some cream for your sunburn. He says no, but you show him how red your shoulders are and somehow he relents and changes his mind.
"Fine," you can go to the drugstore, "but you can't wear those shorts or that tank top. You'll need to wear something modest."
You can't believe he's going to let know go into town. It must be the first time he's ever let you go into town alone, even though you've been driving for years. You don't object to his clothing restrictions, but you secretly bring your shorts and tank top too.
