Before the town in even in sight you, you're stopped in the middle of the road by two rough looking men.
They're armed with sharp looking swords and dirty leathers. They certainly don't look the part of friendly travellers and upon spotting you they get closer.
The one on the right tips his hat as you come to a stop in front of them. "Morning there dear, are you lost? What are you doing out on the road?"
The question is innocent enough, but the way his eyes roam up and down your body are not.
All the same you do your best to smile and act like you haven't noticed.
"Into the market." You explain. "My father wanted me to pick a few things up, that's all. He wants me home before dark though, so i don't want to be rude but I need to go."
"Ah I see." he says. "Well then things should be easy here. You have money on you?"
"I- yes." you admit warily.
His smile grows wider as his partner speaks. "Well then that's good for all of us. If you give us a sum of it and we'll let you on your way."
The shock on your face must have shown because the first man laughs. "Don't look so afraid pet, we're just doing our jobs. there's a toll to pay."
"There never had been before!"
They feigned shock. "You haven't heard the news? there's a group of nasty looking people roaming all around the country side. People are worried so we've generously offered our services to look out for trouble. This is how we get our payment."
"Come on girl." The second man says a bit impatiently now. "Pay the toll and we'll let you move on."
"Or if you don't want to pay with money," the first tells you as his eyes dip down. "There are other ways."
The decision is yours, but if you pay, you might not have enough for whatever Father wanted you to buy.
