ADU Dragon Classifications

There exist many different species of Dragons across the Alvarunus-Dracounus Universe (ADU). The two major subgroups, based on differences in intelligence and power, are the Higher Dragons (or Ihszashi in the New Drahek language) and the Lower Dragons (or Gihszashi). High Dragons are further divided into two subgroups based on size; Greater High Dragons (or Ihszashi Ne) and Lesser High Dragons (or Ihszashi Suh). The largest and most powerful of all Dragon races are the Greater High Dragon Eldest (or Ihszashi Neha), usually simply called the Eldest.

Lower Dragons / Gihszashi

Low Dragons are less intelligent and powerful than their High Dragon cousins. There are many and varied species of Low Dragons, and typically their magical/telepathical strength correlates with adult body size (meaning the larger the dragon, the stronger its powers). Only a few species of smaller, less powerful Gihszashi live in the Dracounus. The largest of the Low Dragons live in the Alvarunus. The eyes of a very powerful Lower Dragon serve as a largely uncontrolled portal for magical/telepathical power, and can have unpredictable and sometimes dangerous effects on those who look directly into them. Body size and length of life are basically finite for Lower Dragons, and varies per species.

Higher Dragons / Ihszashi

Physiology and Magical/Telepathical Ability

The biggest difference between Ihszashi and Gihszashi, other than intelligence and magical/telepathical power, is length of life. Length of life varies greatly for High Dragons; some may live for 80 years, others for 800, depending on how long their spirit is destined to linger in this realm. Ihszashi Suh are just as intelligent and powerful as Ihszashi Ne, but are smaller in size. Some subspecies of Ihszashi Suh only grow to be the size of a large dog, others grow to around the size of a large horse. Ihszashi Ne, however, will continue to grow in size for all their lives, though the rate of growth does slow with age.

High Dragons are the most magically/telepathically powerful race in all the Dracounus, and are rivalled only by the Gimshi. Thus their abilities cover a vast range. All High Dragons have an oval, organic jewel embedded in their skulls called a soulstone. All their magical/telepathical ability is focused and wielded through the soulstone. These stones slowly pulse with a very dim light at all times as long as the Dragon is alive; they will glow brighter when the Dragon is using his/her magical/telepathical powers. Lower Dragons do not have soulstones, and it is believed that the effects of a powerful Low Dragon's eyes are an evolutionary offshoot of the soulstone trait. All High Dragon species are also spiritwelders, and are among the few races that can give birth to elementals.

Morphology and coloring vary widely across the High Dragon species; however, common traits include a quadrapedal form with one pair of wings, an elongated tail, and at least one set of horns.

Behavior

Ihszashi are only found in the Dracounus. All Ihszashi species share a love of high places, and make their homes in the sides of mountains or the tops of trees. In urban environments they do their best to find homes on the topmost floors of the buildings and skyscrapers. On the primary Dragon homeworld of Shivaria, the capital city Lashinath stretches across the width of a mountain range, with hundreds of thousands of Dragon eyries dotting the mountain sides. Buildings and streets crawl up and around the foothills and towards the peaks, much of them carved from the land of the mountains themselves. Some of the city exists underneath the mountains, though not much for neither the Dragons nor the Gimshi (being the second most populous race in Lashinath) enjoy being under ground. Ihszashi Ne in particular tend to live in Lashinath and other mountain cities, as their size often prevents them from being able to subsist comfortably in cities scaled for smaller races.

All the peoples of the Dracounus hold a great respect for the Dragons’ wisdom and power. Though the Dragons technically rule no race or nation other than themselves, they are still considered to be the ultimate authority when it comes to crisis and dispute of all kinds. They are the best mediators, though they only step in when they are requested to do so, or consider it to be necessary. The Dragons are the keepers of knowledge and the guardians of life, both sentient and non, in the Dracounus, and this motivation is deeply inbred into the nature of every Ihszashi.

The Eldest / Ihszashi Neha

The Eldest are the largest and most powerful of all Dragon kind. They divide into five clans, one for each element, and are led by the five Immortals, individual Dragons blessed with seemingly endless life. By their nature all Eldest are elementals, and so the coloring of their scales correlates to their Element/clan. (Spirit - silvers or light violets; Fire - reds or oranges; Air - yellows or light greens; Water - blues or dark violets; Earth - greens or browns.) Eldest morphology is characterized by long, slender necks and tails, a single pair of long, slightly curving horns, and smallish velvety ears. The Shivarian capital city of Lashinath was named after the Immortal Matriarch of the Clan of the Spirit of the same name, who founded of the city many thousands of years ago. She likely was not the first Immortal, but was one of the first whose life is recorded in history. However, the oldest Dragon in recorded history was Shiden, the latest Immortal Matriarch of the Clan of the Spirit; she was 5,483 years old when her life was taken. Her health had by all accounts been perfect, and she likely would be alive to this day had she not been killed.
