Jan arched an eyebrow as Dez rose and headed for the door.

"Nothing personal or anything," Dez said. "I've just got other plans. Maybe some other time."

"Maybe..." Jan said as Dez slipped out into the hall. He shut the door behind him and made his way down the long hall and across the foyer. As he neared the dining hall, the hum of voices rose like the droning of bees. He entered the magnificent room and strode down the short flight of wide, carpeted steps, glancing around for a familiar face.

Naeven Sactaren, the Traxen mage, stood alone near the corner of the long dining table, surveying the scene with his winter blue eyes. Pharis Athamae, the Blue Mage, was talking with Issa Soren, the Wolf Mage, in the middle of the room. Sain Arroy, the Fire Mage, was leaning against one of the great marble pillars, entertaining himself by snapping his fingers and conjuring blue flames from the friction.
