High Voltage/Down the Street1

From Create Your Own Story

As I turned the car onto my street, I realized it might look strange if a strange car was parked in the driveway at this time of night. The last thing I needed was word getting back to Jess that I was having strange women visit after dark. I decided to park a few houses down and walk on the sidewalk. Once on the property, I stayed in the shadows and walked around the side of the house to the back door and knocked.

Watching my body get up from the couch and answer the door was one of the most surreal things I have ever experienced. The door opened. The smile on his face disappeared when he saw me. "You look like shit," Lauren said.

I laughed a little, "This is your body, so if you think you look like shit, that's fine with me."

My body looked at me with disapproval, "It wouldn't kill you to act the part a little, you know. Come on in."

"Don't invite me into my fucking house!" I yelled. I looked around, stepped inside and shut the door. "This is my house, you understand that. I don't know what the hell happened, but this is still my house."

Lauren--or was it Jason--was still dressed in the clothes I wore to the football game: jeans and a pullover sweater. Jason was nursing a large glass of red wine. I went over to the fridge and grabbed a beer. Jason went into the living room and I followed.

We both sat down and stared at each other for a few moments. "Crazy day," I eventually said.

He nodded in agreement. "So what happened after the paramedics came?"

"I woke up in the hospital and then your roommates came and picked me up. How did you know the paramedics came? You didn't go to the hospital?"

He took another dainty sip of wine, "No, you--or I--passed out in the puddle, but this body was okay." He adjusted himself in the seat.

"This body is so weak," I grumbled.

"I mean I felt the shock," he clarified, raising his voice, "But I didn't pass out. I watched them take you away, but I couldn't follow you obviously. It took some time for me to figure out what happened, but eventually I found you ticket stub and went back to your seat." He chuckled, "Jess wasn't so happy when she saw I didn't have her pretzel."

My eyes opened widely at the mention of Jess. "How is Jess? What does she know?" I asked,

"Jess knows nothing," he said calmly. "Once I figured out what happened, I knew I would need to pretend to be you for now. If I started telling everyone I was really a woman then I would probably be locked away in some asylum by now."
