Follow the rising ground

You follow the line of the rising ground as best you can, making your way back up the hill. After a while, the grass begins to shorten and the going becomes much easier. Finally, after many hours, you find yourself back where you encountered the Serpent.
You have wasted several hours walking through the grass. You must now make for the river-bank and try to make up time. You crest the rise, heading roughly north towards the river-bank, where you should be able to pick up the path once more and make faster progress.
As you head down the hillside towards the river bank, you spy movement in the distance. Something is happening at the water's edge. There are three figures, moving around by the water, perhaps fishing. But there is something quite strange about them.
You stop where you are and strain your eyes to look. Figures – women? But they move too fast, flitting across the river-bank like sheet snapping in a breeze. You wait a little longer until you are quite sure. The creatures are floating, and moving through the air. But they seem harmless enough: your guess is that they're fishing.
