Eiji is an SAO survivor, just like many others that play their part in Gun Gale Online. Back in Sword Art Online, he used to be a member of the guild: Knights of the Blood Oath. It's the guild whose leader was Heathcliff, alter revealed as Akihiko Kayaba, and Asuna being its Vice-Commander. During these times, he was called: Nautilus. Together with a good friend in SAO, called Yuuna, he made it through the toughest of times. Sadly, his friend died during a dungeon raid on the 40th floor. The girl sacrificed herself so that others could live. Ever since this moment, Nautilus feels guilty and tries to do anything he can to bring her back somehow.
During and after Ordinal Scale, a comparable AR Idol and AI named Yuna is present, and she is close friends with Eiji. She may not recall the memories she shared with Eiji back in Sword Art Online, but the fact that Eiji tries anything to protect her proves that these events surely have happened. This allows Eiji to grow close to the AR Idol. Despite his efforts, Yuna prefers to stay good friends with Eiji, and nothing more. Not much longer later, Eiji joins Gun Gale Online, meeting up with you and Kirito.
