You nestle yourself more firmly against Maria and wrap your arms around your cousin. Maria nudges your head down onto her upper chest. "Rest now, Josie," she murmurs as she holds you.
Your eyes slowly close...
You filter back to consciousness. Did all that stuff the past two days really happen? You slowly open your eyes.
"Hello, cousin Josie." Maria's laughing, friendly voice reaches your ears.
You check your watch. 2 in the afternoon?! You've missed school! You start to sit up, but a gesture from Maria calms you.
"I figured I'd let you sleep," she laughs. "And you won't be going back to school. I got permission to home-school you. And I'm your new legal guardian."
She sure did work fast...
"How about some food?" Maria smiles. Half an hour later, your stomach is full and you're feeling better.
"What now?" you ask.
Maria walks you to the bed and sits next to you. "If you're up for studying, we can get started. Or we could give you the rest of today to recover, and spend the afternoon snuggling while I take your mind off things."
