Sit and wait for him to come back
From Create Your Own Story
The door clicks shut behind Mike, and the room settles into a low, humming quiet.
You look at Kevin. “I’m not sure about this… does this feel off to you?”
Kevin raises an eyebrow, leaning back in the folding chair. “Off how?”
“I don’t know,” you admit, glancing around the small office again. “It’s just… random. We meet a guy in a park and now we’re here.”
Kevin shrugs. “He showed us paperwork. He’s got equipment. Seems normal enough.”
You nod slowly, but the unease doesn’t go away. The fluorescent lights buzz overhead. The walls are bare except for a faded calendar. The desk is cluttered but ordinary. Nothing obviously wrong.
Still.
“You don’t think it’s weird he left us alone?” you ask.
“He’s getting the photographer,” Kevin replies. “What’s he gonna do, kidnap us in an office building?”
You force a small smile at that, but your foot taps lightly against the floor. The quiet feels heavier now that Mike isn’t filling it with easy conversation.
Kevin checks his phone casually, then slips it back into his pocket. “You worry too much.”
“Maybe,” you say.
A few seconds pass.
Then you hear footsteps in the hallway.
Not just one set.
Two.
Low voices drift closer, muffled but clearly headed this way. One of them lets out a short laugh—deeper than Mike’s.
Kevin straightens in his chair.
The voices stop right outside the door.
The handle turns.
