It's the only place you can think of that might be safe. Even if there are no cops available, there might be guns, and that alone is worth the attempt.
Mrs. Park, her son Mikey, and her daughter Claire all seem unsure of your decision, but listen anyway. Even Melanie argues that you might be able to barricade yourself upstairs and survive the night, but you press on with trying to get them to make the trip. Either way, it's a long shot, with a lot of hope that things go according to plan, but you do consider the options.
