A surprising urge leaps in Gandalf's chest as he realizes how powerful the artifact in front of him is. With this ring, he can destroy Sauron - and bring order to the rest of the world. He will accomplish his mission as a Maiar - and he would be one of the few to do so.
"Frodo, give me the ring." Of course, the little hobbit hesitates - not only becuase of the natural urge to covet the One Ring, but also because he is genuinely surprised that Gandalf wants it. "Why," Frodo asks. "What are you going to do with it?"
"I am going to use it, dear Frodo. You see, it is a powerful weapon - and it is the only thing that can defeat our enemy in the east. He forged it, long ago - and in it he placed most of his power. It will make me strong enough to defeat him, and bring peace to every part of Middle-earth."
Frodo found himself knowing that was a good idea, but not liking it nonetheless - for some reason, he simply did not want Gandalf to wear the ring. He had no idea why. "No," he found himself saying. "Bilbo left it to me. It's mine. It's... precious to me."
Gandalf's mind had already started to consider how powerful he would become once he was wearing the Ring. There was no time for delay - he needed to be wearing it right away. He could not be bothered with this young, immature, complaining hobbit - so he killed him, and took the Ring. Now, Gandalf only needed to decide what to do first with his new-found power.
