Run from the old woman's house

There's something very wrong here. While the woman's back is turned, you try to slip away. But she hears your footsteps and calls out, "Come back here. Please, come back!"
You start running. The old woman begins to scream incoherently. Little Jann is shaking now. There is a cracking sound behind you as you flee up the path and away from the old woman and her oddness.
It is now late afternoon. You pass over the brow of the next hill and below you is the village of Wedgepanti, slung from one side of the valley like a flood-barrier.
Wedgepanti is a village of the Svinn, an aggressive-looking race of man-orcs. You might expect their village to be rowdy. But it seems strangely quiet. Still, there is no way round it. You will have to go through.
You enter the village. There is a definite air of depression hanging over the place. The Svinns are going about their business, slowly and miserably, and pay you no heed. You sit yourself down on a tree stump in the very centre of the village to consider your options.
