Piggy: "Okay, okay, let's be systematic about this. If I can find any of the landmarks on this map, I might be able to make it to a civilized area.
You see a large river on the map, which is connected to a lake. Knowing that rivers usually flow away from lakes and into oceans, you can tell which way is downstream on the map. That means that the area must the slightly sloped in that direction.
Piggy: "Now all I need to do is find which way the terrain is actually sloped. But I'm in the middle of the jungle, how is that going to happen?"
