With the brook as a point of reference, you at least know you're not walking around and around in circles. And it seems you made the right decision - after barely five minutes of walking, you stumble out of the trees and find yourself on the road!
It's a little galling to know you were so close this whole time, but at least you made it in the end. The brook isn't big enough to warrant a bridge in the road - it trickles out of a pipe and likely continues on the other side.
Now you have to decide where you're going to go from here.
