Climb the tree

Struggling to reach the highest branches, you eventually get a good view of the island.
To the north there is a large mountain, with what seems to be snow on top.
To the south the jungle gets denser. You believe you can see smoke, perhaps from a fire, which may mean people.
To the east there is a clear route to a sandy beach. The walk looks safe enough.
To the west there was another beach, but this one was blocked by the forest.
You slide down the tree. Which way do you go?
