You pack your few belongings, pay the three pounds sterling, and board the ship.

The voyage is rough and the food sparse and bad. Several times a storm approaches that would sink the ship. Fortunately, they all veer away.

Finally, you make it to a harbor in New York. You take your bag and head into the streets.

A few inquiries later, you have two possible plans.

• Accept a menial job sweeping floors at a boardinghouse in return for shelter, food, and one dollar a month
• Go into the Irish neighborhood a couple miles away and try your luck there
