The beast is off the path to the right, so if you creep through the treeline behind it you may escape unnoticed. You try this tactic, moving slowly and carefully, making as little noise as possible, placing your feet with delicate care.
After a few more yards you get a look at the animal between the trees. It is a Ratbear! It is much closer than you thought: its sleek black fur allows it to hide in the shadows until almost upon you.
