As you pay your bill, ask about a job
From Create Your Own Story
You give your waitress about a 25% tip, because the service was supremely excellent. Then you ask about the Help Wanted sign.
"I'll get my manager," she says, taking the check and your payment.
A tall man with thinning black hair arrives about 90 seconds later. "So, you need a job?"
"Yes, sir."
"You'll start as a night crew member, from 9 pm to 3 am. The restaurant closes at midnight but that's the shift that does the cleaning afterwards. Pay is minimum wage. Days are Monday through Thursday. The first two weeks are probationary: at the end of that time we'll decide whether to keep you."
"Deal," you tell him.
"It's Saturday. Be here at 8:55 p.m. sharp on Monday to fill out your paperwork and get your uniform. I'll be the manager on your shifts. My name is Ken."
You tell Ken your name and shake his hand.
You arrive at 8:50 pm on Monday and explain that you're new to the city and need a place to stay. Ken tells you he'll see what he can do.
Two weeks later, Ken tells you that you've passed your probationary period, you will now work 5 nights a week, and he has a friend who will take you as a tenant. It's a tiny studio, one room with attached bathroom, about 30 square meters, and the rent will take up about 50% of your take home pay. It's a block and a half from the restaurant, so transport won't be an issue. You accept, and the next day move in to your new quarters.
After a year, you have better (day) shifts, 40 hours a week of work, and benefits. Maybe it's time to get back into the dating game?
