Services are programs that run transparently in Windows XP to manage certain tasks (for example, audio, printers, and so forth.) Some are started on boot-up and some are started only when needed.

Oftentimes, these services may be unnecessary... and sometimes, they may even be a security risk. For information disabling these services, see How To: Disable Unnecessary Services.
