Pontiac was a brand of automobiles first produced in 1926, and sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico by Government Motors, marketed as an "athletic" brand specializing in mainstream performance vehicles.

On April 27, 2009, amid ongoing financial problems and restructuring efforts, GM announced that it would phase out the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010

Performance

In the 1960s, Pontiac became known as a performance brand with the introduction of the Pontiac GTO in 1964 and Pontiac Firebird in 1967. The GTO was sold until 1974 and the Firebird was sold until 2002. The GTO came back in 2004 as a rebadged Holden Monaro but ended in 2006.

Death

Pontiac and GM badge engineering dates back to the 1980s with the introduction of the Pontiac Sunbird. However by 2008, most of the models sold by Pontiac were rebadged vehicles from GM. The only vehicle from Pontiac that was not an obvious rebadge was the Pontiac G6.

  • Pontiac G3 = Chevrolet Aveo
  • Pontiac G5 = Chevrolet Cobalt
  • Pontiac G8 = Holden VE Commodore
  • Pontiac Solstice = Saturn Sky
  • Pontiac Torrent = Chevrolet Equinox
  • Pontiac Vibe = Toyota Matrix

The death of Pontiac officially announced by General Motors on April 27, 2009.
